March

March brings a little rain after the dry winter, but I have my irrigation running still for consistency.

In March I am typically harvesting carrots and onions from last fall. I leave some brocolli/cauliflower growing (usually those that don’t make great heads, or have other troubles) so that they flower in March for the first few pollinators that brave the cool weather.

Maintenance in March means raking and filling in mulch where its needed, and cleaning up the leftovers from the winter. There are new weeds emerging and they get pulled/burned with the weed torch. I also put some compost mulch and/or fertilizer on my berries and fruit trees.

The first pests I usually see are aphids on my snap peas. I spray them with neem oil which helps some but mostly I just wait until the ladybug larvae show up very soon to clean up.

Prep work in March is smoothing, sometimes turning over beds, and adding compost. I should have my trellises set up by now, but sometimes they get put in in March.
