October

Hurricane season in South Carolina means rain is usually plentiful, a little too much at times. I have an automatic timer for my irrigation system, so I now just water 20 minutes every morning. One benefit of my sandy soil is that even if I have lots of rain, I can’t really over-water.

October is more about planting than harvesting. Some sweet potatoes may be in the ground still if my broccoli hasn’t been planted yet.

Maintenance in October typically consists of weeding un-mulched rows, since things are just sprouting or still being planted, I usually haven’t put down my hay around them yet. As things turn over, there are always opportunities for fixing up mulch, compost, etc.

Pest control mostly consists of putting out Sluggo+ to protect my young broccoli seedlings. Its still warm at times this time of year so I expect to see some  pests still active.

Prep this time of year is just making sure I am set up for winter and making sure my carrot beds stay free of my mulch chips, rocks, etc. for my carrot succession planting.
