September
September is usually pretty easy on water. Although its still hot, I don’t typically have many things growing. I just need to do enough to keep my blueberries and blackberries happy. This year I am still just turning on my irrigation on the whole garden for a few minutes each morning for the berries + a few watermelon which have had a second wind.
Not much to harvest in September aside from figs if I can get any. ( September is usually a big month for figs except that they are covered in bees this year!) Not sure why but I can’t hardly get one before the bees eat it up. I want to keep the bees happy but will look into a way to protect them more next year. I am still getting some watermelon growing so I will keep an eye on those as well.
Having removed most of my old plants last year, and some more (kindof) mild temps brings in weeds. Its tempting to rake up all of my hay mulch to put into the compost pile with some of the other material I have recently removed, but its more important to leave the soil covered, or the weeds will take over. The longer you grow in a space, the weeds should get less and less but my beds are still fairly new so I have to stay on top of pulling and burning this month.
Pests aren’t much of an issue in the garden as not much is really growing. Pest control is a bit of a side-note while I’m put and about. I will do some more snail/slug bait since I have some watermelon growing still. Its probably a good time to look into some off-season control measures if there are any good ones.
Right now its time to prep for the winter garden. This mostly means making sure that there are places to grow. Seed starts are happening in the garage, but its time to make sure that seeds get ordered (its not too late) and planted.
